British heterosexual couple loses battle over the right to have a civil partnership instead of ‘patriarchal’ marriage
A British couple lost their Court of Appeal battle for the right to enter into a civil partnership instead of marriage, which they consider to have patriarchal baggage. As per the Civil Partnership Act of 2004, only same-sex couples are eligible to enter civil partnership in the UK. A government representative said that a decision had not yet been taken whether to extend civil partnerships to opposite-sex couples, abolish them or phase them out. After a couple of public consultations and a debate in Parliament, it was decided to see the effect of extending marriage to same-sex couples had on civil partnerships before making a final decision.
