UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights issues General Comment No. 24 on human rights and business activities
The UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights has issued a new General Comment No. 24 on State Obligations under the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in the Context of Business Activities. Emerging from the belief that business activities, especially those of multi-national corporations, can have a significant and often adverse impact on human rights of local communities, the comment calls for state control over activities of corporations across nationals borders. The Committee expects home States of transnational corporations to establish appropriate remedies, guaranteeing effective access to justice for victims of business-related human rights abuses.
